Boss: A cloud-based data archive for electron microscopy and x-ray microtomography

Brain Observatory Storage Service and Database (BossDB) is a volumetric database for 3D and 4D neuroimaging data. BossDB focuses primarily on storing volumetric Electron Microscopy (EM) and X-Ray Microtomography (XRM) datasets generated as a part of the BRAIN Initiative. BossDB stores high resolution, multi-channel image data with registered segmentations, annotations and meshes, and connects to a number of community resources for data access and data visualization. BossDB also stores connectomics datasets and contains a number of software tools and interfaces for querying and searching connectomes.

Volumetric high-resolution neuroimaging data enables structural, neuroanatomical, and microscale connectomics based research, which are instrumental to fulfilling the BRAIN Initiative goal of understanding neural circuits and neural connectivity.

BossDB is operated by the Research and Exploratory Development Department of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Project Data Types

  • Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microtomography volumetric image data

  • BossDB can ingest a variety of image data types and encodings, and can provide image, object, and segmentation data in multiple formats (e.g., PNG, JPG, TIFF, numpy array, etc.)  through our application programming interface (API).
